For those who want to enjoy the beauty of Lake Powell without the full houseboat experience, staying on land and spending your days on the water is the perfect way to get the best of both worlds. This option offers the flexibility of having a comfortable home base while still getting to explore the lake’s hidden canyons and iconic red rock landscapes. Plus, you’ll avoid some of the logistics of a houseboat while still having plenty of time to enjoy all that Lake Powell has to offer!
Here’s how we planned a perfect mix of land and lake during our recent trip to Lake Powell:
Staying on Land: The Best of Comfort and Convenience
For this trip, we decided to stay on land at a cozy rental just minutes from the lake. There are plenty of accommodation options around Lake Powell, from vacation rentals to campgrounds and lodges. We opted for a comfortable vacation home that allowed us to come back to a fully stocked kitchen, air conditioning, and comfy beds after a long day out on the water.
Why staying on land works:
Convenience: You have easy access to nearby restaurants, grocery stores, and gas stations, which is great for meal prep and making sure you’re well-stocked before heading out for the day.
Flexibility: If you’re not looking to commit to sleeping on a boat for multiple nights, staying on land gives you the flexibility to spend as much (or as little) time on the water as you want.
Comfort: Let’s be real, sometimes it’s nice to have a real shower, a plush bed, and Wi-Fi after a long day of adventures!
Day Trips on the Water: Exploring Lake Powell’s Hidden Gems
Even though we were based on land, we rented a powerboat for day trips out on the water. You can rent boats for half-days, full days, or even multiple days depending on how much you want to explore. This gave us the freedom to cruise around Lake Powell’s stunning landscape during the day and retreat to the comfort of our rental in the evening.
Tips for a great day on the lake:
Start early: If you want to snag the best spots on the lake for swimming or exploring, get out early! The mornings are often calm, and you’ll beat the afternoon rush.
Bring a picnic: Pack a cooler with drinks, snacks, and sandwiches to enjoy out on the lake. Many areas around Lake Powell have little beach coves where you can anchor, swim, and relax for hours.
Explore the slot canyons: Lake Powell is famous for its narrow slot canyons that you can only access by boat. Places like Antelope Canyon and Labyrinth Canyon are must-sees, and exploring them by boat is a one-of-a-kind experience.
Motion Sickness: For girlies like me who get motion sick easily, a jet ski is the absolute best way to explore Lake Powell! Since you have full control over your movements and speed, it’s easier to avoid that queasy feeling that sometimes comes with being a passenger on a boat. Plus, jet skis are so much fun—you can zip around the lake, weave in and out of the coves, and get up close to those stunning red rock formations. It’s an adventurous way to explore the lake at your own pace without the discomfort!
Our Favorite Spots on Lake Powell
1. Antelope CanyonThis is a top attraction on Lake Powell, and for good reason! Antelope Canyon is known for its breathtaking slot canyon formations, and you can access parts of it by boat. It’s an easy ride from the marina, and once you arrive, you can anchor and hike through the narrow, red-rock passages. It’s like something out of a dream!
2. Rainbow Bridge National MonumentIf you’re up for a longer boat ride, Rainbow Bridge is one of the world’s largest natural bridges, and it’s truly a sight to behold. The journey itself is spectacular as you cruise through the winding waterways of the lake, and the monument itself is awe-inspiring.
3. Navajo CanyonThis is a lesser-known spot but definitely worth the trip. The canyon’s high red cliffs rise dramatically out of the water, and it’s a peaceful spot to stop and swim. We had the entire place to ourselves for a while, which was pure magic.
Evening Relaxation: Returning to the Comfort of Land
After a full day of boating, swimming, and exploring, returning to our rental each night was a great way to unwind. We’d cook dinner together, share stories from the day, and even catch a beautiful sunset over the lake from our patio.
Evening activities:
Stargazing: Lake Powell has some of the clearest skies I’ve ever seen, and being out of the city meant we had incredible views of the stars each night. Don’t forget to bring a telescope or even just a pair of binoculars!
Campfire nights: If your rental allows for it, gathering around a campfire to roast marshmallows is the perfect way to end the day. Bring along your favorite campfire treats and make some memories under the stars.
Useful Tips for Staying on Land and Exploring Lake Powell
Boat rentals: Make sure to book your boat rental in advance, especially during peak season. Prices vary depending on the size of the boat and length of rental, but expect to pay around $400-$800 per day for a powerboat.
Marina parking: If you’re staying on land, you’ll likely need to drive to the marina each day to pick up your boat. There’s ample parking, but try to arrive early to secure a spot, especially in busy months.
Packing essentials: Sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water are musts for a day on the lake. Also, pack towels, water shoes, and a waterproof bag to keep your belongings safe while out on the water.
Fuel up: Be sure to top off your boat’s gas tank before heading out for the day. There are marinas with fuel stations on the lake, but it’s better to start your day with a full tank to avoid interruptions.
Why Staying on Land is a Great Option for Families
Staying on land while exploring Lake Powell by day offers the best of both worlds, especially if you’re traveling with family or want the convenience of a more traditional vacation experience. It’s perfect for those who love adventure but also appreciate having a comfortable home base to return to each night.
Whether you’re out exploring the lake’s hidden canyons or relaxing on a sunny beach, Lake Powell offers an unforgettable escape into nature. By staying on land, you can enjoy all the perks of a houseboat vacation while keeping things flexible, comfortable, and stress-free!
