Over the River & Through the Woods to the Breckenridge Troll We Go

Our recent road trip from Southern Utah to Colorado was nothing short of an adventure, especially with our three furry friends in tow. One of the highlights of our journey was visiting the Breckenridge Troll, a whimsical giant hidden in the woods that makes for an unforgettable hike—especially for dog lovers!

A Scenic Drive

The drive to Breckenridge was filled with breathtaking views and winding roads, which only heightened our excitement for the trek ahead. As we approached our destination, we couldn't help but admire the towering mountains and lush forests surrounding us. The crisp mountain air was invigorating, and our pups were just as eager to explore as we were.

Finding the Troll

We parked at the trailhead, which is conveniently located just a short distance from downtown Breckenridge at the ice rink. The hike to the troll is an easy one, making it a perfect outing for families and dogs alike. The path winds through beautiful aspen groves and alongside a gentle creek, providing a picturesque backdrop for our adventure.

As we hiked, our dogs happily trotted alongside us, taking in the sights and sounds of the forest. The trail is well-marked and dog-friendly, so we felt comfortable letting our pups lead the way as we enjoyed the journey.

After a little over half a mile of hiking, we finally arrived at the clearing where the troll resides. To our surprise, he was much larger than we had imagined! Standing at over 15 feet tall, the Breckenridge Troll, named "Isak Heartstone," is crafted from reclaimed wood and appears to be guarding the forest. His intricate details and charming expression captivated us—and our dogs seemed just as intrigued!

The Experience

We spent some time taking photos and letting the dogs explore the area around the troll. The natural setting, combined with the artistic installation, made for a magical experience. It was the perfect spot to sit and relax, enjoying the peace of nature while our dogs sniffed around and played.

What made this hike even more special was the sense of community and creativity that surrounded the troll. Local artists and volunteers worked together to create this unique piece of art, and you can feel the love and dedication that went into bringing Isak Heartstone to life.

Tips for Visiting

If you're planning a visit to the Breckenridge Troll with your pups, here are a few tips to make the most of your experience:

  1. Bring Water: Ensure you have enough water for both yourself and your dogs, especially on warmer days.

  2. Dog-Friendly Gear: Make sure your dogs are comfortable with hiking gear, such as harnesses and leashes, as the trail can be rocky in places.
